From Cynicism to Strength: How Chronic Pain Became My Gift

It sounds sarcastic to call chronic pain a "gift that keeps on giving," but hear me out—there is a profound truth to the cliché.

The hardships I faced between 2018 and 2020 unknowingly prepared me for the chronic pain that struck in 2021. Each previous challenge was a stepping stone, providing basic coping tools I would later refine. That cynical "gift" of recurring challenges ultimately forged the resilience that became Iron Bison.

The Turning Point: Opportunity from Pain

No one chooses chronic pain. Yet, this four-year journey has completely transformed my perspective. My early cynicism has given way to opportunity. The shift began when I codified the nine principles guiding my daily pain management. This list became my daily compass—a constant reminder of what it takes to thrive.

With these principles in hand, I began writing my book and, more importantly, launched Iron Bison.

A New Mission: Translating Pain into Purpose

Throughout my long career, I’ve seen countless individuals—including active and retired public safety members, medical professionals, and veterans—engage in self-destructive behaviors due to a lack of coping skills.

My "gift" is the ability to translate my TEE (Training, Education, and Experience) into actionable tools. I use my success in confronting chronic pain to help those who have sacrificed so much, guiding them to address their own challenges constructively.

I don't want this pain, but I refuse to waste the chance to make every day count by sharing a path to mental and emotional survival. Coping with chronic pain is a mental health battle, and I am thriving most of the time. Now, I need to share that victory.

This is why I can say it with sincerity: It truly is a gift.

Your sacrifice deserves resilience.

If you are a public safety professional, veteran, or medical professional ready to forge your own path to thriving despite chronic challenges, let's talk.
